The importance of using pressure treated wood for your garden building

At Paterson Garden Buildings, our commitment to quality, durability, and customer satisfaction drives every decision we make, especially when it comes to building materials. We carefully selected our timber suppliers, and we use pressure treated wood in all of our timber garden buildings.

But why is this so important? In this blog we are going to explain the benefits of using high quality, pressure treated wood when building garden rooms, log stores, summer houses and combination buildings. Using the best materials gets your garden building off to the right start and helps it stand the test of time.

The benefits of pressure treated wood

The pressure treated wood comes with a 20 year guarantee on insect and woodworm infestation, so you know it’s the real deal! There are several reasons why manufacturers are able to offer such a long guarantee:

Protection against creepy crawlies

Insects and wood worms can cause havoc on timber buildings, and one of the main benefits of pressure treated wood is that it offers long-lasting protection against nasty bugs. Preservatives that keep them at bay are infused into the wood during the pressure treatment, guaranteed to keep them away for at least 20 years.

Caring for timber garden buildings

While pressure treated wood is highly resistant to the elements, it does need some level of maintenance. We recommend that you coat it with an oil-based paint as soon as possible after we install it (we can do this initial painting for you to make your life even easier!). The coating will then have to be topped up every 2-3 years (you will need to apply one full coat each time). It’s also important to seal over external joints, corner straps, seam straps and windows with a paintable mastic sealant.

What type of timber do you use?

For our cladding we use 19mm pressure treated Scandinavian red pine, sourced from colder climates as it has grown slower which makes it stronger and more durable. For the roof and floor boards, we use 19mm pressure treated white pine, which provides excellent structural support and longevity. Our framing is made from 45mm x 45mm pressure treated timber, with heavier framing used on larger sized buildings.

What else do we do to protect your garden building?

At Paterson Garden Buildings, we go above and beyond to ensure our structures are protected from the elements. Our sheds feature hand-nailed cladding, which prevents water ingress and enhances the durability of the building. This attention to detail means that sheds produced by Paterson Garden Buildings have been known to last for over 30 years and more.

Vents for air circulation

We install air vents in all of our garden buildings, promoting air circulation and keeping moisture at bay. By reducing moisture build-up inside the structure, we decrease the risk of mould and damp which keeps your wood in great condition for longer, and helps you breathe healthy air while enjoying your garden building.

Toughened Glass

We are sure you have all seen many greenhouses and sheds with broken windows! This is very unsafe and can cause damage to the property contained within your garden building. Keeping you safe and making sure every aspect of your structure is highly durable is paramount, so we use 4mm toughened glass in all our buildings. This type of glass is not only stronger than standard glass but also safer, as it is designed to shatter into small, less dangerous pieces if broken.

Tough metal

Of course the buildings aren’t all wood, there’s some metal in there too! All of which has to be highly resistant to rust and corrosion. We use hot dipped galvanised stainless steel ironmongery and fixings to improve structural integrity.

Premium garden building roofing

The roof is one of the most critical components of any building, and we ensure that ours protect the structure below. We use premium grade felt for our roofs, which is tacked down securely and all joints are sealed. This meticulous process prevents leaks and ensures that the roof can withstand harsh weather conditions.

Flooring

We protect the floors of your building with three coats of polyurethane paint. This durable finish protects the wood from wear and tear, moisture and common household accidents (like dropped cups of tea!)

Sustainability promise

By choosing pressure treated wood, we are ensuring that our buildings are not only durable but also sustainable, as they require fewer replacements and repairs over time. Our innovative design features, such as improved air circulation and enhanced sealing techniques, demonstrate our dedication to continually improving our products for the benefit of our customers and the environment.
